The MMEP is passionate about introducing the love of reading to children. One method we use to encourage this is by projecting a book onto a screen and reading the book together so the whole class can participate. We then discuss the story in detail, highlighting interesting and new words which are then written on the board as the story unfolds. We go through the book a second time, looking at the images and asking the children to identify certain things – as they volunteer the words they write these on the board themselves. The learners love this – everyone wants turn. We then move onto various spelling games, for example the bag of clothes pegs is a big hit. A letter of the alphabet is written on each peg and they attach these pegs to ice-cream sticks to construct their own words.
It’s all about enjoying a story.
